September 7, 2013

marg1MS steer

Our 2013 MS Charity Steer has won the Meat Standards Australia Eating Quality Award for Heavyweight Class 7.  This prestigious award is another win by a Kelynack  MS Charity Steer, exhibited by Downlands College Toowoomba.  Great to see our breeding program, which we focus on production and carcase quality, getting results.  This steer was a pure bred Red Angus, from our breeding program, who scored 85 points on the hook.  This steer is part of the Brekky Creek Hotel menu at the EKKA Champion Steer Luncheon on the 17th September 2013

Kelynack Gabrielle 1 (1)MS steer

Well another Brisbane Show – EKKA over and done!  Amazing results – the MS Charity Steer was in the top row of hoof judging and gained 85 points on hook to come 6th out of 45.  Auctioned for $6.90kg with all proceeds to MS QLD.  The middleweight steer gained 88 points to place 3rd – very happy with our purebred Red Angus steers and a big congratulations to Downlands College for preparing them.

We also won Grand Champion Red Angus Female, Junior Champion Bull and Reserve Champion Senior Bull, who are all stretched out in their paddocks resting and glad to be home.

EKKA steer to be auctioned next week!!!

July 28, 2013

2013-07-18 MS Steer Kelynack Horatio 009

This year’s EKKA charity steer is on track to raise funds for MS (Multiple Sclerosis) QLD again, being auctioned during the Led Steer Sale next Wednesday, by Landmark.

This year’s steer will again be a purebred Red Angus donated by Keynack Red Angus at Southbrook.  Marking the fourth year that Kelynack have donated a steer at the EKKA, this year’s has again been prepared by students of Downlands College Toowoomba.

Lorna Will, of Kelynack Red Angus, says this year’s auction proceeds will go towards much – needed rural care facilities for MS sufferers in Queensland. “Our family has been affected by MS, and this is our way of trying to put a little back towards easing the suffering.  This will be the first time we have been able to auction our annual steer at the EKKA, so we are really hoping to get a good result and get access for rural MS affected people”.

In the previous years, the charity steers donated have won the MSA taste test, and last year’s steer won the Heavyweight Carcase class.

2013 – Its got to get better??

February 1, 2013

Well what a start to 2013.  Its never dull – bushfires raging throughout Australia and we are flooded again.  Our thoughts and prayers for everyone suffering horrible losses with the fires – we are supporting fodderaid.org to try to get urgent stock feed out.  Marty Lill and his crew have done the most amazing job of fighting the Coonabarabran fire that would’nt quit.   We wish Marty and everyone at Chadwick Downs all the strenght possible to rebuild!  Best wishes to Fullers at PC Angus after their fire losses too.

Dreadful stock losses here in QLD and Northern NSW with flooding – yet Western Qld and the NT remain in dire drought!

Our thoughts also to our poor Brahman breeder friends – currently under quarantine for BJD through no faulty of their own.

2013 can only get better…….

Winning Heavyweight Carcase-Class 9 RNA 2012

We thought our 2012 Charity Steer was good and yesterday we proved it!  Winning the heavyweight steer class, the 620kg live steer was 15months old and purebred Red Angus – straight from our breeding program.  Sired by Blue Hill Challenge and out of a first calf heifer by A15,  “Gizmo” was prepared by Downlands College, Toowoomba, with all proceeds to go to the MS Society and Downlands.  We are still waiting to see if we also win the taste test to get a final prize money count for Charity.

By the way, also won reserve junior champion heifer, 1 1st and 2 3rds in the registered section with our 3 head.

Kelynack's Champions at Ekka 2011

Kelynack exhibited Junior and Reserve Junior Champion Red Angus bulls at the Brisbane Royal Show 2011 – otherwise known as the “Ekka”.

Photographed are Marg, Ben and BJ with Fernando, Franklin and Fleur competing in the breeders group.  Well done to Kellie and Stephen for exhibiting the Grand Champion Red Angus Female – Waterfront Design, who went on to narrowly miss being Interbreed Champion Female of the Show by 3 lousy points to Keith and Roz Glasson’s Charolais Cow.  Never mind – Reserve Interbreed is a big effort.  Well Done to Graig and Renee Gapes on Champion Red Angus bull – The 2 Grand Champions went on to be 2nd overall in the Interbreed Pair!!!!
